HERMAN ENGELS
conductor

The 'Kamerharmonie Vlaanderen' opens with the famous overture to "William Tell" by Rossini, an opera with a happy ending. The great overture that the opera preceeds, contains beautiful melodies in cello, flute and English horn. The true fame of this overture is in the finals: the march in which a memorable effect is achieved.

Roeland Hendrickx is the first clarinet of the National Orchestra of Belgium. He is part of a fantastic clarinet and piano duo with Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort and brings alive the Mozart clarinet concerto. Mozart composed this masterpiece for his friend and former soloists Anton Stadler.

Herman Engels has for this New Year's concert two symphonic poems: symphonic music with a story, a background, that will be told during the show.

Alexander Borodin composed "In the Steppes of Central Asia" in which he tells the story of a caravan of merchants leaving from Russia going through the Steppes, escorted by Russian soldiers.

Edvard Grieg gifted composer of the Norwegian national romantic school, famous for the "Peer Gynt - Suite". Again, a story which happened in the early 19 th century in Gulbrandsdal in Norway, based on a play by Ibsen. Peer is a rough farm boy who meets a girl at a wedding: Solvegj. Peer wants to dance with her but she refuses because Solvegj doesn't like his wild nature. Peer is angry and kidnaps the bride Ingrid and brings her to his cabin in the mountains. He releases Ingrid rapidly, and leaves for the mountains. But Solvegj fell in love with him and looks for him in his hut. Peer is still gone, but Solvegj awaits his return. Peer returns, broken and exhausted. He dies content in the arms of Solvegj. Peer Gynt is a dreamer, someone with imagination. Grieg takes us along with him into the story of Peer.
