Herman Engels studied at the Lemmens Institute (Leuven) and at the Music Conservatories of Antwerp and Brussels.

He studied for choir directorship under Hans Grischkat (Stuttgart) and Wilhelm Ehmann (St.Moritz) and orchestra conducting under Otmar Suitner (Mozarteum Salzburg) and Pierre Dervaux (Paris).

Herman Engels has been second director and assistant of Vic Nees at the BRTN radio choir in Brussels.

In the Netherlands, he conducted and thaugt at the Music Conservatories of Utrecht and The Hague. He was invited by the University of the Philippines ( Manila) and the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica ( San José) , masterclass and concerts.

Herman Engels has been conducting in Belgium as well as abroad. Among them were the Flanders Festival, Internationales Jugendfestspieltreffen Bayreuth , Easter Festival Prague, Music Spring Presov (SK).

He has been a guest conductor at the Belgian Radio and Television (BRTN), the Süddeutsche Rundfunkchor(SDR) Stuttgart, the Musici de Praga, the Prager Collegium ,the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra Manila, the Westdeutscher Rundfunkchor (WDR) Köln , Chamber Orchestra Sebastian Strings, Choeur de Radio France Paris, State Opera Orchestra Budapest (Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra), Slovak Sinfonietta (Statni Komorni Orchestra Zilna), Jihoceska Statni Komorni Filharmonie Ceske Budejovice (Budweis ,CZ), Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra (Hungary) ,the ElblandPhilharmonie (D), the Bayerischer Rundfunkchor (BR) München,the Norddeutscher Rundfunkchor (NDR) Hamburg, , the Budapest Chamber Orchestra ( concert tour in Brasil) ,the Janacek-Philharmonie Ostrava (CZ) , the Martinu Philharmonie (CZ), the Dvorak Collegium (CZ), the Czech Virtuosi ( Brno), the Filharmonie Hradec Kralové (CZ), the Moravska Philharmonie (CZ), the State Choir Letvija , Riga (Letland), the Filharmonica de Stat Oradea (RO), the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie (B), the Moscou New Chamber Orchestra, The Capella Cracoviensis (Krakow), the Filharmonica de Stat Sibiu (RO), etc.

He collaborated in the opera Orfeo by Walter Hus for Antwerp 1993, Cultural Capital of Europe.

Herman Engels is a permanent guestconductor of the Filharmonica de Stat Oradea (RO) and the Slovak Sinfonietta (SK) and was "conductor in residence" of the Association of Christian Employers and Business Executives in Belgium ( Flanders).

Herman Engels has been awarded the “Médaille de Vermeil” of “Arts – Sciences – Lettres”, prize Académie Française, Paris and the “Medaglia d’ oro” , Istituto dei Studi Storici B. Pio IX, Roma.

He also has been awarded the Fuga Trofee 2007 by the Union of Belgian Composers.
